Resonance and Invariance in I Ching

A deeper analysis of I Ching hexagrams reveals hidden structural relationships that are not immediately visible at first glance. Beneath their symbolic meanings lies a deeper layer of symmetry, reflection, and transformations connecting one hexagram to another through precise binary and trigram patterns. These relationships form what we call the Resonant and Invariant Hexagrams of the Book of Changes.

Resonant Hexagrams: Harmony between Different Figures

A closer look at individual hexagrams reveals a fascinating phenomenon within the transformation network: when several distinct transformation methods are applied to the same source hexagram they converge upon one identical outcome. In such cases, the original hexagram functions as a kind of magnetic center — a node of recurring correspondence within the greater field of transformations.

We call these resulting forms Resonant Hexagrams. They illustrate the dual nature of change within the I Ching — one mathematical, one musical—reminding us that structure and spirit often mirror one another within the vast web of transformations.

In analytical terms, Resonant Hexagrams mark points of structural intersection, where multiple transformational pathways overlap, revealing the hidden symmetries that underlie the hexagram system. They are the harmonic nodes of the I Ching’s architecture, uniting geometry and meaning.

For example, Hexagram #38 – Opposition (Stalemate) functions as the Resonant of Hexagram #40 – Deliverance (Removing Obstacles), emerging independently through four distinct transformations: Monograms-, Digrams- and Trigrams- Flip+ (inversed Flip) as well as Digrams-Evolutional.

But there are three more hexagrams that also serve as Resonant for source hexagram #40: #35 - Moving Forward (Easy Progress), #39 - Hardship (Obstruction) and #63 - After Completion (Culmination).

Such recurrence indicates a strong affinity between these figures — one that extends beyond surface structure into shared, deeply symbolic tone.

Invariant Transformations: The Still Point within Change

While Resonant Hexagrams reveal harmony between distinct figures, another phenomenon within the transformation network shows harmony within a single figure itself. These are known as Invariant Transformations — operations that, when applied to a given hexagram, reproduce the same hexagram as the result.

In mathematical terms, an invariant transformation represents perfect internal symmetry. It is a condition where the operation of change mirrors back upon itself, yielding no external difference. In symbolic terms, such a transformation expresses the stillness hidden inside motion — the unchanging center within the flow of transformation.

Some hexagrams, by virtue of their structural balance, are naturally invariant under several transformation types. For example, Hexagram #2 – Receptive often remains unchanged under reversals, rotations, and flips due to its fully yin symmetry. In contrast, Hexagram #1 – Creative achieves invariance through pure yang uniformity.

These hexagrams embody what the I Ching calls the Dao of constancy within change. They remind us that transformation is not always movement toward another form — sometimes, it is the revelation of inner stability. Within the dance of opposites, the invariant state becomes the still axis, the unmoving heart of the living system of change.

Closing Reflections

When viewed as a whole, the patterns of Resonance and Invariance form the hidden geometry of the I Ching. They show that transformation is not random but rhythmic — a living dialogue between movement and stillness. Each hexagram, through its Resonant counterparts, participates in the great exchange of forms; through its Invariant traits, it preserves the signature of its inner essence.

Together they trace a map of balance — an unseen lattice of correspondence where every shift echoes through the whole. Resonant Hexagrams reveal the outward harmony of related figures, while Invariant Transformations disclose the inward poise of enduring structure. In this interplay, the Book of Changes discloses its most subtle teaching: that transformation itself is the continuity of pattern, and constancy is the quiet pulse within every change.

In contemplative practice, recognizing these correspondences allows the reader to move beyond interpretation into participation — to sense how each question, each transformation, is part of a greater harmony unfolding. The hexagram ceases to be a static symbol and becomes a living moment of awareness, reminding us that the Dao is both the source and the flow, the stillness and the motion, the center and the orbit.

The detailed map of Resonant (harmonies across change) and Invariant (harmonies within change) hexagrams for all 64 hexagrams in I Ching - along with their brief descriptions and notes - can be found below.

Reference Table – Resonant and Invariant Hexagrams of I Ching

For each of the 64 hexagrams, this table lists its primary Resonant Hexagrams (harmonies across change) and Invariant Transformations (harmonies within change). Together, they outline the full network of structural and symbolic relationships within the Big Orbit of transformation.
